6 window and door cleaning mistakes to avoid

Deep cleaning the house every couple of weeks is a routine that helps keep the environment safe and hygienic for all the residents. The process involves cleaning the floor thoroughly, washing windows, and cleaning doors. While it may seem like an easy job to simply splash some soap water on everything and wipe it down with a cloth, some mistakes must be avoided when cleaning windows and doors. Here’s what to know about the job.

Using harsh detergents
Detergents that have strong chemicals in them should be avoided for use on doors as they may harm the door material. There is a protective sealant applied on the doors to minimize deterioration over time, but using these harsh chemicals and striping this protective layer will lead to issues like discoloration and fading of the material. Thus, one must use a soft cloth and warm water to simply remove the buildup and the dust.

Using a dirty cloth
It is extremely important to be careful of which cloth is being used to clean the surface of the door. Using an old dusty cloth because it may being used for dusting will not suffice. This can leave traces of dirt and even leave scratch marks on the door. Also, using a dirty cloth will definitely leave any bacteria behind, making the door even dirtier than before.

Washing with hard water
When it comes to windows, one of the biggest mistakes that should be avoided is to wash the windows with hard water. Using hard water will cause mineral buildup and leave behind harsh spots on the window panes. Distilled water or soft water are preferred choices for cleaning windows.

Not removing dust
Before you splash water on the window, it is important to first use a clean cloth to remove any dust on the windows. This is an important step because if you directly start using water to clean the windows, there will be residue, and the dirt granules can also leave scratches on the window. Wipe the surface with a dry cloth first, then use a spray followed by a clean microfiber towel to wipe off the cleaning liquid. Doing this at least twice a week will keep the windows shining clean!

Skipping the squeegee
Using this small tool is an important step in the window cleaning process. Yes, you may have used a microfiber cloth to wipe down the glass window, but a squeegee can make the window look spotless and squeaky clean. The hard rubber used on the tool helps in drying out the moisture from the glass completely.

Applying excess pressure
Clean with gentle hands; this goes for both doors and windows. Applying too much pressure on windows can be unsafe as it can easily shatter and create an accident. Plus, it can leave scratches on the surface of the material for doors. If the door is made out of glass, then it can shatter if too much pressure is applied.
