11 remedies for managing cold sores

Cold sores (or fever blisters) that appear on or near the mouth are common symptoms of the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). These fluid-filled blisters can be extremely painful. While there is no permanent cure for this condition today, one can manage cold sores and relieve associated symptoms to improve their quality of life. Read on to learn about a few natural remedies that may help one get rid of cold sores:

1. Ice
To manage pain associated with a cold sore, one should consider using an ice pack. It is important to wrap it in a towel before applying, as icing the area directly could damage the skin.

2. Sunscreen
Direct sun exposure could trigger or worsen a cold sore. So, one should always wear sunscreen when heading out.

3. Aloe vera gel
Aloe is well-renowned for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Using natural aloe on cold sores could be beneficial in fighting off viruses and helping the sore heal faster.

4. Apple cider vinegar
A lot has been said about apple cider vinegar’s antimicrobial properties. It may help treat cold sores as well. However, it is best to dilute the vinegar in water before using it on the skin. Also, one should not apply this solution more than one or two times a day.

5. Topical creams
Topical creams are easily available at pharmacies and general stores. These can work wonders in minimizing pain and keeping the skin around the sore soft and supple.

6. Propolis
Propolis is a bee product that is known for its potent antiviral properties. Using it as an ointment for cold sores may help heal them faster.

7. Lemon balm
Lemon balm, a lesser-known herb from the mint family, may also be useful in treating cold sores. Although research is limited in the area, some preliminary studies have shown that lemon balm can be an effective and fast-acting relief option for sores.

8. Essential oils
Some studies have also shown that essential oils could be an effective remedy for cold sores. They suggest that some oils have compounds that may slow down or prevent viral replication, reducing healing times. Some essential oils that may be helpful are rosemary, peppermint, tea tree, clove, cinnamon, basil, ginger, thyme, sandalwood, and hyssop oils.

9. Vitamins C and E
Taking adequate amounts of vitamins C and E can also speed up the healing process. Studies have found that vitamin C can inactivate the herpes virus, and vitamin E can work wonders to heal the skin.

10. Kanuka honey
Bees produce this honey using the special Manuka trees in New Zealand. Well-known for its antimicrobial properties, applying medical-grade kanuka honey can help in treating cold sores naturally.

11. Lifestyle changes
When dealing with a cold sore, it is also important to make certain lifestyle changes. These may include:

– Avoiding triggers, such as sun exposure or acidic foods
– Reducing stress levels
– Avoiding touching or popping the sores
– Washing hands frequently, especially after touching the face

It is important to consult a doctor before trying a new remedy for cold sores. This can help one choose a suitable option and avoid worsening the symptoms.
